StatuesStatues began to flourish in Western Europe during the Middle Ages. Some of the Virgin Mary began to appear, making her look less God-like and more like a human mother. To the right is the statue known as the Madonna and child by the famous artist Michelangelo. This statue portrays Mary, who is known to have given birth while still a virgin, and her son Jesus as an infant.
