In the Beginning: Stories of OriginsThe Hebrew Bible records the roots of Judaism go back far into the past to a landless people sometimes call the Hebrews and more commonly called Israelites, tracing back to an ancestor named Abraham. The Hebrew Bible is significant for the history of the Hebrews and for the development of Judaism over the past two thousand years.

The World of the Patriarchs and Matriarchs
Abraham is the first patriarch, which is discussed in Genesis. He was called by God to leave his home. Abraham’s migration became a pilgrimage of great importance. When Abraham returns, Abraham and his male descendants must be circumcised as a sign of their exclusive relationship with God. Most importantly, God asks of Abraham to sacrifice his only son, Isaac. When he is at the point of sacrifice, God intervenes. A ram appears stuck in some bushed and is used as a sacrifice; this was an action of loyalty from Abraham to God that grants innumerable descendants. Genesis father contains matriarchs of the Hebrew people such: Sarah, Rebecca, Rachel, and Leah. Theses women have strong and carefully drawn personalities
